Covet Book Review

Hi everyone! Welcome back to Cover to Cover. Today I want to talk about a book I just recently finished because I have so many thoughts on it. I also feel like it’s been forever since I’ve done a book review on the blog, so I’m excited to get into it.

***Disclaimer: Spoilers beyond this point***

I want to talk about the third installment to the Crave series, Covet by Tracy Wolff. I like this series; I really liked the first two books, Crave and Crush. It reminds me a lot of the old tween vampire Twilight era. Especially because I feel like the vampire novels kind of died for a little bit. After the Twilight craze that whole area of vampires and werewolves died down and people started writing about Fae. As of recently though, the vampire trend might be coming back. This series does a great job of pulling you back into that paranormal/fantasy realm. It’s very nostalgic.

But moving on to the actual book, I liked it. I would give it a 3/5 stars. I liked the character development that continued throughout this book. I think all the characters, especially Grace, really grew in this novel. They are becoming more adult and more of the rulers they are supposed to be. I love a good character development what can I say.

I also really liked the plot idea and the direction the book is heading in. I think Wolff did a great job of taking us further from where we started in the story which is the point. I love looking back at the beginning of a book or series and seeing how far the author has taken us from that initial point. That is called great story development. And if you’re reading this and you’re a writer, you know that you always have to leave a little opening in your story for it to continue on. Never close the circle. I think the plan for the characters were set from the beginning, the reader knew what to expect. They knew what the big task was and they knew the consequences/reasoning for going on the big adventure. It was predictable, but also not at the same time. It was suspenseful because yeah you knew what they needed to do, but were they actually going to do it? Were they actually going to get out of the prison? I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop; I was waiting for some kind of betrayal.

There were also things I didn’t like while reading this book. Out of the three books in the series so far, I think this one is my least favorite. For perspective this book is around 670 pages, so it’s not a short story. I feel like in some instances scenes were way too drawn out. For example, in the beginning we learn about a crown that has serious powers and can basically anything. BUT they don’t go looking for it until the very last pages of the book! They had to go on all these detours and other quests in order to get the crown. I just feel like I was waiting the whole book for them to complete this task, and I don’t think it should’ve taken this long.

There were also a lot of unnecessary scenes. I know they were put in there because that is when there is character development happening, but I feel like that development could’ve been moved to a more crucial scene. The beginning/middle was very dry. The middle of the book was very drawn out. I took the longest to read this book than the others. For some reason, I didn’t really vibe with this book like I did the others.

Another thing that has bothered me since the first book is that Grace’s inner dialogue is SO cringe-y. She thinks the most obvious things and it feels like the writing is trying too hard to make her seem her age. She’s eighteen and she graduated high school in this book, but I feel like the inner dialogue is almost too young for her. Celena Sardothian from Throne of Glass was eighteen when she had to compete in the competition to win her freedom, and I wasn’t cringing at her dialogue!

The only other thing that REALLY bothered me about this book is when we find out Jaxon’s soul is dying Grace and Hudson both come to a silent understanding that Grace has to be with him so his soul doesn’t disintegrate. LIKE WHAT. She has to be with him because he’s going to die and not because she loves him? Yes, I’m sure she still loves Jaxon, but she’s in love with someone else! If the book actually went through with that whole idea, I would’ve been livid. When a main character has two love interests, they should always pick the second because 1) the second wouldn’t be introduced if they were supposed to be with the first love interest, 2) the second love interest ALWAYS brings in more character development for the main characters (usually for the better), and 3) the second love interest is always the better choice. Don’t fight me on this. Just the fact that Grace would’ve basically been forced to be with Jaxon is crazy.

Like I said in the beginning, I did like this book, and I will be reading the last installment. The fourth book, Court doesn’t come out until September. Which is super impressive since this book came out in March. I need to know how everything ends, and if the villainous vampire king gets what he deserves!

Alright folks, thanks for reading! Come back for next week’s post!
