Everyone knows who William Shakespeare is. High schools and colleges have been teaching students many of his plays. Scholars have studied his work time and time again because there is much to learn from each play. Most students dread the Shakespeare unit because they don't understand what is being said. However, the more you read it, the easier it becomes to understand it. Now, I realize not everyone likes Shakespeare as others, but Shakespeare can be seen quoted, referenced, retold, etc. through many modern works today. I feel like it is important to have at least read one play by him.
I have had the chance to take a Shakespeare course in college and after being exposed to many of his plays, here is a list of the ones I think people should take the time to read (even though people should read as many of his plays as possible).
Romeo and Juliet
Hamlet
Macbeth
The Merchant of Venice
The Tempest
King Lear
